Like it or lump it, it’s time to begin winter maintenance planning and scheduling. Although I must admit, even thinking about winter right now takes some motivation.
Given the harsh environment of winter operations, a winter equipment maintenance plan is a key component of your equipment maintenance log and can have a significant impact on the longevity of your equipment. Maintenance planning and scheduling does not have to be complicated but it does need to be comprehensive and consistent.

By law, municipal vehicles must operate under the same laws and guidelines that govern our roads as commercial vehicles. They must retain maintenance and repair records for all work performed on each piece of equipment. Often times, Insurance companies also have this same requirement for proof of due diligence purposes.

As required by law in all U.S. states and Canadian provinces, commercial vehicles must retain maintenance records for every repair, for every unit, for a period of 7 to 10 years, depending on the state or province. For some companies, this can become an administrative challenge.
Years ago, I worked in the IT department for a large transport company and found myself in a rare meeting with the president of the company. What the meeting was about, I cannot recall, nor does it matter. But at one point, he said that his company was like a triangle, only upside down. He was at the bottom and the drivers were at the top. He then went on to add that the IT guy is somewhere near the bottom because it’s easier to find a good IT guy than it is a good driver. :)
Avoiding excessive stress on any piece of equipment will add longevity to the investment you have made in your fleet. However, your fleet goes nowhere without a driver. Therefore, it makes reasonable sense that reducing driver stress should also be factored into your fleet management plan.
